So I watched it again
Summary
Pick/market: These are just my observations I had as I watched it again for how things played out.
These are just my observations I had as I watched it again for how things played out. It really was a missed opportunity. A tale of two games.
Rutgers came out playing for pride and there season at home just like you'd figure they would. They're putting up a fight through the beginning of the game. Having some wins in plays here and there with Duff and the short yardage run game. We have a penalty or a missed assignment a few times but we are executing on offense. We aren't getting dominant defensive pressure but we aren't getting pushed back or giving ground up easy along the line of scrimmage either.
Rewatch the game till the fake punt at 3min left in the 2nd quarter. This game looks exactly like we want it to. We are clearly the better team. The pockets look good. The run blocking is solid. The O-line will never be a road grading unit but they get in the way enough that they can win lines of scrimmage and to that point they were. You feel like we are on the brink of breaking Rutgers when we stop them on 3rd and 20 inside their own red zone with a Desmond Stephan's sack with the score 17-7.
Then it all just turns on that fake punt. From there on it's a dogfight . Winning is good. But that lack of killer and that inability to get back in the driver's seat is worrisome. Schiano said it. He said we were young in key spots and he wanted to body blow us to see if we were ready for this. We gassed on defense as the game wore on. 50 snaps for Jide and AVS, Kam and Wafle? I thought that's what we were trying to avoid by creating depth.
You can see that GP understood his defenses susceptibility to Duff especially. At his size we have nobody that could lock him up man to man (Jontez seemed not 100% as he only had 22snaps). We have small corners. It is what it is. So GP wanted to use this 3 man and I think he thought he could create pressure off of it with his pass rushers and ruching a 4th at times from different places. And it seemed to be working as Duff had a few plays ( 2 catches for 23yards with a TD in the first half) but was mostly contained....but as Rutgers didn't go away and it's a game going into the 4th, your asking guys who are on their way to 50 snaps to rush 3 and get pressure off it. 🤷🏾♂️ To add to that when we get the pick 6 it's at the end of a long drive by their offense to start the third, as a consequence, the defense goes right back out.
