Biggest issue with defense
Summary
Offense: No, the line is not playing great, but the biggest issue IMHO is how we handle the zone and specifically the seams where responsibility is being handed off.
No, the line is not playing great, but the biggest issue IMHO is how we handle the zone and specifically the seams where responsibility is being handed off. This is supposed to be a specialty of the GP defense, but it is currently being exploited with alarming effectiveness, and the more the GP sits back and gives the opposing offenses the full two seconds, the more momentum the opponent gains on their drives. Whether this is an issue with the current personnel, with GP and his staff, or with the acclimation time is hard to say. I think most of us suspect it's at least two out of the three. I suspect it behooves GP to mix in more man coverage as well as bring more pressure. It's too demoralizing to keep leaving that soft spot open and allow the opposing offense to keep rolling. Riley himself seemed to lose confidence in the defense yesterday when he made the call to go on fourth down rather than taking the points. It's a little bit of a crisis of confidence.
