WATCH: SMU HC Rhett Lashlee analyzes 41-31 loss at Louisville
Summary
Pick/market: I really don't like the play design on either conversion play.
I really don't like the play design on either conversion play. But on the first one, PJ decides to double the end and let 9 run free at Jennings. I think that is the coaching he is talking about. Also, neither WR ran a hot route on that play once 9 decided to blitz. If the inside WR, Hale, runs a hot, it freezes the LB, which gives Pittman the space to catch that ball and turn up field. Play design and execution. On the second 4th down, I don't want Pittman throwing to Jennings. I want an RPO with Pittman stacked on the outside so that if they load 8 in the box against Raphael, you have Pittman on the outside running through people. With them stacking the inside, Jennings wasn't far enough outside to prevent the inside help from stopping the play. And he wasn't in a stack without a blocker or uncovered. With the play call, and how they positioned, Pittman has to keep that and run up the middle. But the call itself, I would have rather had Jennings throwing with Raphael as the inside option and Pittman on the outside. Getting too cute is the right word.
