Trump to issue an Executive Order to “save college athletics” within one week
Summary
NIL disguised as pay-for-play is major problem; players shouldn't transfer yearly for highest bidder; education deprioritized; coaches get transfer windows but players don't.
That’s definitely a MAJOR part of it. The other major part is the outright pay for play disguised as NIL. I have zero issue with players getting NIL in the sense it was meant. They wanna do a commercial for a local car lot and pocket $10k? Cool go for it. Should all players who appear in ncaa football video games receive royalties? Absolutely. But that’s not what’s happening. It’s pay for play and they go to the new highest bidder the next year. I can’t fault them - this is potentially life changing money in some cases. However, the fact that education is the last thing on the priority list when playing college sports is pretty telling when it comes to uncovering major issues. The old “but the coach can leave whenever they want!” argument is thrown around a lot, like it’s apples for apples, but it’s obviously not. If a coach leaves, open a transfer window for 10 days after a new coach is named. Now I fully realize there is more to it than the simple version I mention above but despite the nuance, it’s obvious this needs to be addressed in a way that benefits the entirety of d1 football (athletics in general) and not just more power and money for the B1G and SEC.
