Jeremiah Smith enjoys record-breaking day, while Brandon Inniss hauls in Hail Mary
Summary
Pick/market: It was a big Saturday at the Horseshoe for Ohio State's two veteran wide receivers and team captains, Jeremiah Smith and Brandon Inniss.
It was a big Saturday at the Horseshoe for Ohio State's two veteran wide receivers and team captains, Jeremiah Smith and Brandon Inniss. The junior Smith, OSU's All-American star, became the school's career receiving yards record holder as he caught five passes for 85 yards in the Buckeyes' 59-3 win over Kent State. The senior Inniss also enjoyed a big day as he caught four passes for 78 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown on a Hail Mary pass from quarterback Julian Sayin on the final play of the first half. That put the Buckeyes up 35-0 at the intermission. A couple of young receivers also stood out as freshman Brock Boyd had four catches for 66 yards, while his classmate Chris Henry Jr. caught a short pass from backup quarterback Luke Fahey and took off on a 75-yard catch-and-run touchdown as the Buckeyes poured it on in the second half. Smith is in the process of rewriting the OSU receiving record book. He ended the day with 2,958 yards. The record was previously held by Michael Jenkins (2,898 yards from 2000-03). Purdue's John Standeford (2000-03) holds the Big Ten career record with 3,788 receiving yards. Smith is 182 yards away from entering the conference's all-time top 10, a threshold currently held by Wisconsin's Jared Abbrederis (2010-13) at 3,140 yards. Smith is also currently fourth on the career receptions list with 184. The top three are Emeka Egbuka (205 catches, 2021-24), K.J. Hill (201 catches, 2016-19) and David Boston (191 catches, 1996-98). And Smith is currently tied for fourth on the career touchdown receptions list with 30. He is tied with Devin Smith (2011-14). The top three are Chris Olave (35 TD catches, 2018-21), Boston (34 TD catches, 1996-98) and Marvin Harrison Jr. (31 TD catches, 2021-23). Speaking after the game, Smith discussed what breaking the receiving yards record means to him. "I put a lot of hard work into it with," Smith said. "Coach Day said (it happened in) 33 games, so I'm blessed. But I've got two more to get -- Chris Olave with touchdown receptions and Emeka Egbuka with receptions." Day is in his 10th season at Ohio State overall and eighth as the head coach. He was asked where Smith ranks among the many top receivers he has coached with the Buckeyes. "Boy, it's hard to put anybody above him. It is. It's hard," Day said. "Thirty-three games to break the all-time leading receiving record at Ohio State. I think that speaks more than anything to just him, his mindset, his discipline, what he does every day. You know, I told the team when we celebrated him, gave him the game ball and again, he's a great example for everybody and all those young receivers and just the way he works every day. "He's a guy who shows up and just loves to compete, loves the big moments, but it's because of how hard he trains, how serious he is. He loves his teammates and so I know his teammates appreciate who he is and certainly we do as coaches and as fans. I think they do, but I hope they all recognize, just not only what you see on the field, but who he is as a person, how much he loves Ohio State and this program." Inniss and Smith go back to their younger days playing football together and against each other in South Florida. He was asked for his take on seeing his friend earn these career honors. "I mean, it's everything," Inniss said. "I really can't put it into words. I'm so proud of him, man. The work he puts in day in and day out. He's like no receiver I've ever seen in my life. I'm just proud of him. "He sets the tone for what it's like on the field, but off the field it's even better. He's very focused. Nothing gets him distracted. He does all the right things." Below, we have video of both Smith and Inniss meeting with the media after the game. Plus, we have more comments from both receivers on their big day against Kent State.
