Jamey's Thoughts from the Weekend
Summary
Pick/market: Jamey here with the thoughts from the weekend.
Hey y’all! Jamey here with the thoughts from the weekend. Well they needed that. First half was dicey, no doubt. Granted, 17-7 or 21-7 look and feel better. Didn’t think the hold on Jack Pedersen needed to get called on that one. And I really for Jack Stevens right now. He’s much better than this, but it’s rough. Second half was what we should’ve expected from the get-go. And it all looked really good. Obviously, it’s Duquesne. That helps. But not even looking at the results of the plays, the schemes and the execution were far better. If that holds, they’ll be able to win games. It won’t be as easy against other teams, but part of the issue the last two weeks was the execution aspect. Fulfilling assignments, hitting holes, getting your playmakers in space. Really liked the tempo and some of the misdirection. Thought that really opened things up. Defense was mostly locked in. Didn’t love the first half, especially with a couple of the runs. But they tightened their angles and set edges much better in the second half. One carry for 54 yards, the other 32 went for 51. Next week will be a different challenge. Noah Fifita won’t run nearly as much as Demond Williams and Avery Johnson. He’s also the best passer of the three and the best QB they will see all year. WSU will need to get home and they will need the corners to be on their game. Jalil Tucker was dressed and warmed up, but didn’t play. May have been precautionary on that front. Need him next week. Really like what I’ve seen from Jamarey Smith and Isaiah Hung so far. Smith is slated to be the nickel, but I think his future will be at outside corner. Hung is absolutely everywhere lately. He’s earned every snap he’s gotten. Josh Wedel is another second-year who has looked really solid on the interior. Jackquintin Bal didn’t show me a ton in camp, but he’s looked solid the last two games. Think the offensive line move was the right one. Get Lester back at guard and Caldwell in. OL was much better in the second half. Two punt returns, two different players. Can’t say that was something I ever expected to see. Max Woods is so shifty. But funny to see Kirby Vorhees, the perceived power back, to be the one to break off the big run. Good for him too. He put a lot of the struggles of the last two weeks on his shoulders. Raw deal for Jack Pedersen. Of his three holds, only one was legit. The officiating was bizarre. Didn’t recognize that crew, and perhaps for good reason. The atmosphere was completely different with the new additions to the stadium. Finally feels like it’s out of the Stone Age with the presentation. Excited to see the lights go to work next week. Actually thought the attendance was solid. For an 0-2 team facing a team no one had ever heard of? Not bad. NC State. Oh man. How can you ever let that happen. Love seeing Ole Miss stick it to Lane. What a game that was. No clue what to make of the league. Utah State looks bad. Oregon State looks good? That’s surprising, but good for them. Boise struggled with South Dakota, but then Dylan Riley happened. He’s not Ashton Jeanty, but he’s sensational. San Diego State has looked really poor. Fresno State has looked iffy. CSU has the two wins, but against nobody. Texas State’s offense has the potential to be lethal.
