Press Conference: Ball State - Liberty University
- Liberty coach Jamey Chadwell said replacing Deshawn Purdie with Jaylen Henderson against Gardner-Webb was a game-specific decision, not a permanent switch. Purdie remained with the first unit in practice while both quarterbacks received substantial work. Chadwell liked their response but made clear the job must be earned and another change remains possible if execution falls short. - Liberty's four drops, three on third down, and two turnovers stalled the offense after a strong start. Chadwell also identified a missed route/read combination as a turning point. The offense generated long touchdown throws from both quarterbacks, but explosive completions masked inconsistent drive-to-drive execution rather than solving it. - Chadwell said Liberty needs its reserve offensive linemen to play more and become more consistent after an opening-week performance below the unit's standard. The new rotation had good moments but also mistakes, including a holding penalty that erased a long run. He is seeking improvement from the current depth, not announcing a settled new starting five. - Liberty forced three turnovers and recorded ten tackles for loss against Gardner-Webb, but defensive penalties repeatedly extended possessions. Chadwell cited roughly five defensive holding/pass-interference calls through two games and more than 100 penalty yards conceded in the latest game. He changed practice work to improve eye discipline and technique without taking away coverage aggression.
