The 3-2-1 Column: Evaluating where Pitt stands going into the stretch run of training camp
- Camp confidence is strongest around Kade Bell's third-year offense and quarterback Mason Heintschel, whose 2025 pace and improved command give Pitt a credible path to its best scoring unit since 2021.
- Ja'Kyrian Turner is being managed like a featured back, while freshman Damon Ferguson has pushed into the rotation; staff changes to run structure and an upgraded line are expected to improve a rushing attack that ranked 115th last year.
- Netinho Olivieri is viewed as a high-impact addition at left tackle, but receiver difference-makers and staying healthy remain the main variables for the offense's ceiling.
- The defense offers continuity under Cory Sanders and returns a veteran front, but replacing elite linebacker production and generating a steadier pass rush are still open questions.
- Special teams carried the clearest camp risk: Sam Hunsaker and Antonio Chadha remained locked in the placekicker battle, and neither Gabe Russo nor Kaemon Tijerina had secured the punting job.
