- Kenyon Alston's size and prior production of roughly 1,000 receiving yards across two seasons at Incarnate Word make him an intriguing addition to Illinois' receiver rotation. - Ty Robinson is an important depth piece because Illinois needs a reliable backup to J-Shawn Platt in the slot, allowing Trimble, Dixon and Hudson Clement to remain focused on perimeter roles. - Alexander Capka-Jones has shown useful flashes since transferring from Ball State, but his extensive injury history makes his ability to hold a rotational role uncertain.

- Matthew Bailey's health is the central variable in Illinois' linebacker outlook, with a full 12-game season projected to put him above 100 tackles. - Cody Case is expected to return punts while remaining part of the receiver room. - Illinois has practiced its punters as holders, with Eddie Casper also considered for the holding role.

- Illinois pairs an experienced defense with largely new special teams, creating a risk that poor field position forces the defense to protect short fields. - Short fields would reduce the space Illinois has to create negative plays and let opponents use less aggressive, run-heavy offense, making hidden yardage a potential source of game volatility.

- Illinois enters 2026 with Katin Houser established as its quarterback after prior experience at Michigan State and East Carolina, replacing Luke Altmyer as the key operator for an offense that went 8-1 in one-score conference and bowl games over the last two seasons. - Despite very few returning Illinois offensive-line snaps, Bret Bielema expects an experienced group: Colorado State transfer Christian Martin at left tackle, JUCO veteran Maika Matelau at left guard, former Cincinnati and Wisconsin starter Jake Renfro at center, two-year starter Brandon Henderson at right guard, and a right tackle who has started an Illini bowl game. - Illinois is installing a distinct Rocky Long-derived 3-3-5 under its new defensive staff. Although the Illini aligned structurally in a 3-3-5 on roughly 90% of 2025 snaps, Bielema said this version is meaningfully different, easier for transfers to learn and intentionally uncommon enough to complicate weekly preparation. - Bielema identified road performance as Illinois' remaining hurdle after a 6-1 home record across the last two seasons. The 2026 schedule starts with UAB and Southern Illinois, then sends the Illini to Ohio State, while Duke and Oregon visit Champaign and later Friday games come against Nebraska at home and UCLA at the Rose Bowl.
