- Kenyon Alston's size and prior production of roughly 1,000 receiving yards across two seasons at Incarnate Word make him an intriguing addition to Illinois' receiver rotation. - Ty Robinson is an important depth piece because Illinois needs a reliable backup to J-Shawn Platt in the slot, allowing Trimble, Dixon and Hudson Clement to remain focused on perimeter roles. - Alexander Capka-Jones has shown useful flashes since transferring from Ball State, but his extensive injury history makes his ability to hold a rotational role uncertain.

- Matthew Bailey's health is the central variable in Illinois' linebacker outlook, with a full 12-game season projected to put him above 100 tackles. - Cody Case is expected to return punts while remaining part of the receiver room. - Illinois has practiced its punters as holders, with Eddie Casper also considered for the holding role.

- Jayshon Platt and Alex Perry will both miss Illinois' season opener, and Platt's timetable could extend into Weeks 2, 3, or 4. - The projected starting offensive line is Christian Martin at left tackle, Mike Matilow at left guard, captain Jake Runfrode at center, Brandon Henderson at right guard, and Nathan Canapica at right tackle. - Illinois has enough running-back depth when healthy, but the hosts emphasized that the entire room must first get back to full availability. - Daniel Brown's recurring availability issues and an ACL recovery elsewhere in the group leave Illinois with additional Week 1 depth concerns.
