The Turning Point: What Went Wrong with Jaden Craig and TCU's Offense
- TCU's 15-10 loss to North Carolina exposed a constrained offense more than a protection problem: Jaden Craig was clean on 76.5% of dropbacks but averaged 4.7 yards per clean-pocket attempt, made no big-time throws and rarely attacked downfield.
- The offense removed Craig's proven rushing dimension: he did not keep an RPO once, including bypassing an open fourth-down running lane. That let UNC crash the edge and compress Jeremy Payne and Jon Denman's rushing lanes.
- Gordon Sammis' intended play-action and screen identity did not translate: seven play-action attempts produced eight yards, while six screens produced three yards. Straight dropbacks accounted for 160 of Craig's 168 passing yards.
- The staff is expected to stay with the experienced Craig rather than turn immediately to Adam Schobel or Jack Daulton. Home games against Grambling State and Arkansas State are the runway to restore designed quarterback runs and intermediate/deep shots before Big 12 play opens at UCF.
