The "U" Looks Mortal
- Injury: Despite the new CFL landscape of transfers and NIL...there seems to be a common theme each season that certain teams jump out as being almost unbeatable.

Live updates: Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman Sept. 14 press conference before Michigan State game
- Marcus Freeman said Dallas Golden is now full-go after a shoulder injury cost him extended fall-camp time and contributed to his limited nickel role. Christian Gray has played well there. Golden is next in the punt-return order behind Jordan Faison, and Freeman valued his game reps against Rice.
- Notre Dame is gradually increasing Viliamu-Asa's snap load. Freeman said the main linebackers will all play through their own packages and that the staff will manage his progression carefully; he did not provide a target snap count or declare an unrestricted workload.
- Freeman said the staff is considering run-game scheme changes to fit its new backs. Jonaz Walton could earn more reps if opportunities arise; his speed is a strength, but he is still learning college-level block reads, setup and timing. More work is possible, not a guaranteed change in the backfield order.
- Anthonie Knapp and Will Black intentionally stayed in the Rice game longer than the other starters for extra work. Freeman particularly wanted Knapp to see more situations at his new guard position; the extended snaps were developmental reps, not an announced change in availability or starting status.
- Elijah Burress and Jerome Bettis Jr. are earning the Notre Dame staff's trust through game execution, while Matt Jeffery, Logan Saldate and Devin Fitzgerald also impressed against Rice. Freeman said young receivers can earn further opportunities, without announcing a new starting lineup or fixed target distribution.

Sam Leavitt doubtful for Saturday...
- Injury: Interesting reporting from The Athletic: The SEC issued a clarification last year that coaches have a “duty to act in good faith” on the availability reports.

Sam Leavitt doubtful for Saturday...
- Injury: it's "arm soreness", which could easily be cleared up by gameday and very difficult to prove it didn't exist.

Michigan State | Marcus Freeman Weekly Press Conference (9.14.26)
- Notre Dame's staff is reviewing running-back aiming points, reads and blocking combinations to create more explosive runs with this year's personnel instead of assuming last year's backs' instincts will transfer. Marcus Freeman said Jonas Walton could earn more opportunities and Nolan James is building trust in both phases. These are developmental adjustments, not a declared new starting rotation.
- Notre Dame deliberately kept Anthony at left guard and Will Black in longer for position-specific experience. Cam Herren's guard work offers another option because the staff trusts Ashton Craig and Joe Auding at center. Freeman liked Herren's toughness but still sees technique cleanup; the extra reps do not announce a replacement starting line.
- Freeman is progressing Kingston's workload rather than immediately giving him everything, while viewing four Notre Dame linebackers as starter-quality and planning rotations and passing packages. Dallas Golden is back after missing substantial camp time with a shoulder injury and handled backup punt returns. Neither update guarantees a full defensive workload.
- Freeman trusts CJ Carr to adjust unfavorable looks after coach-to-player communication stops. His confidence in Spencer Porath also affects third-down calls and can make a field-goal attempt preferable to fourth-down aggression. Those comments describe Notre Dame's situational options, not a blanket move to conservative play-calling.
